Accredited Sleep Technologist Education Program (A-STEP)

The Accredited Sleep Technologist Education Program (A-STEP) was developed by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) to standardize sleep technologist education and training. By taking a program through a recognized A-STEP provider, trainees gain the education and training required to meet eligibility requirements through two pathway options with the BRPT registry exams.

Depending on the pathway, A-STEP can be completed as either an comprehensive online introductory course or through a program of online self-study program. A-Step providers are responsible for administering exams and awarding designations to successful candidates. MRG has been an A-STEP provider since 2015.

Who the courses are for:

We offer BRPT’s Focused 2 sleep technology training to prepare individuals who plan to challenge the Certified Polysomnographic Technician (CPSGT) credentialing exam. This is an entry-level certification earned by individuals new to the sleep field. The CPSGT certificate is valid only for three years and cannot be renewed. This training is also taken for the Registered Polysomnographic Technician (RPSGT) credentialing exam.

The Self Study Program is designed for individuals who have foundational knowledge of sleep and experience in the sleep lab. The Self Study Program is required to challenge both the Certified Polysomnographic Technician (CPSGT) and the Registered Polysomnographic Technician (RPSGT) credentialing exams. The RPSGT credential is recognized internationally and represents the highest certification in the field for health care professionals who clinically assess patients with sleep disorders.

The STAR course really filled the gap of missing knowledge about sleep, its diagnostic measures and its application in day-to-day interactions with patients. Even the specific knowledge about PSG now I think it “makes sense” to have although I am not actually working as a PSGT. I can’t speak on behalf of people that work for SFL, but in my opinion, this course is great for them too as they are our frontline troops. Before I attended the course, I merely thought we are doing this only because we need to as a requirement from CSPA. Now, I do think that we do need the knowledge.
